Getting Started on Project Life

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

A few days ago, I mentioned that I had jumped on the Project Life bandwagon. If you're not familiar with Project Life, go read this. Go on, I'll wait.

Ok, now that we're all on the same page - I've been intrigued by PL for a long time, but wasn't quite sure it was for me. After all, I love too many scrapbook papers to use a kit and have everything matchy-matchy. Of course, being matchy-matchy has its advantages - it definitely gives your book more cohesiveness. Ultimately I decided I would do PL with my own scrapbook supplies and make some things very scrappy and other things more streamlined. I'm gonna try not to go overboard - I want this to be easy and doable!

I worked on making my own 'kit' and the title page over this past weekend. I don't think I'm finished with the title page yet, but I love it so far. What is it missing? I'm thinking our last name or a picture of us... or both...

As for the kit, I used paper from about 10 different paper collections. I love the variety! I picked from October Afternoon (Sidewalks and Woodland Park), My Mind's Eye 6x6 pads (Chevron, Find & Dandy Boy and Girl, Miss Caroline, Dwell, Everyday Flair, Blink of an Eye), Studio Calico (Abroad), and threw in a little Basic Grey Serendipity. The Serendipity doesn't match exactly, but some of the colors do. I think it keeps everything from being too pastel.

And I'm using this album - how cute is this?!? It's available here.

Alright, so are you convinced? Anybody joining me on my Project Life journey this year?

I love reading each and every comment!

  1. I am doing Project Life and loving it!! I did not buy a core kit, either, because they are expensive, but I did buy an album, pocket pages in different configurations and a set of small journaling cards. I have been using what I have and downloading printables.

I like the kit you put together :)

    1. Thanks Robyn! I'm looking forward to using some printables too. I think the variety of pocket page designs will be more interesting than just one design.

  2. I'm doing PL but no daily, I go just by months, I never take pictures every day. I'm also using my stuff, I have to much and PL here in Canada is expensive for me. TFS

    1. I won't be taking a picture every day either. I think that would stress me out! I'm going to try to add in lots of "other" stuff (weather, what's on the blog, #currentlylist, etc) to take up some of the spaces if I don't have enough pictures.

  3. Hi Emily! Smash* Sister here ;) Love your blog! And I can't wait to start PL this year. This year will be my first, and as a smasher*, you know that this is something that you could easily do along with smashing, daybooking, etc. Sometimes, there is just so much that you want to document that could fit into more than one book. That is where I'm at right now. Sometimes I feel like getting my hands dirty and smashing, and other days I just want to add some photos with journal and filler cards, and not worry about glue or tape. I this is going to be a fun journey for us both!

Remember a couple months back when you asked if I had a blog? Well, I decided to jump into this blog world myself and finally started one literally, 2 days ago ;) I would it if you checked me out http://islandgirlstudio.blogspot.com

  4. I'm new to project life and love what you came up with for your kit. I plan to do my own too, really want to use up what I have at home. Now my question is where did you get the holder for your cards that is a good idea. New follower too

    1. I'm new too - isn't it fun? I definitely wanted to use up what I have at home. I have so much! I got the holder on amazon - it's a Becky Higgins organizational tray. I just started following you too.

  5. I love how you made your own cards. Also started this year only and am doing a combination of PL kits that I bought digitally, some freebies and making a card now and again.

I live in South Africa and our access to the PL stuff is limited.

    1. Thanks Cat! I love freebies too - I pin them and print them out occasionally. I like the look of the real PL kits, but really don't want to keep buying product when I have tons of great stuff already. Sounds like you have a great plan - I'm sure it's challenging since you can't get the real PL stuff.

  6. Love your ideas.

I have just started this month as I am time poor with study and work :)
I am using my stash and am getting a Kraft core kit to help me out. I am currently making my own Journal Cards.
