26 Books - January

Monday, February 2, 2015

Growing up, I used to read for pleasure all the time. We went to the library and checked out books on a regular basis and I loved going to B. Dalton bookstore in the mall. When I moved home after pharmacy school, I called the library to see how to get a new library card. The children's librarian (Mrs. Powers) knew who I was before I even told her (lol!). I quit reading for pleasure sometime during pharmacy school. I didn't have much free time and I had to read so many textbooks that extra reading just didn't happen.

This year I signed into Goodreads and set a goal of 24 books for 2015... 2 per month seemed doable! And now that I found this read-a-long prompt list, I'll be updating my progress monthly. I added a couple more to my original goal.

1 - A book you own but haven't read
2 - a book that was made into a movie
3 - a book you pick solely because of the cover
4 - a book your friend loves
5 - a book published this year
6 - a book by an author you've never read before
7 - a book by an author you love
8 - a book at the bottom of your "to be read" pile
9 - a book with a color in the title
10 - a book set somewhere you've always wanted to visit
11 - a book you started but never finished
12 - a book with a lion, a witch, or a wardrobe
13 - a book with a female heroine
14 - a book set in the summer
15 - a book of poems
16 - a book you learned about because of this challenge
17 - a book that will make you smarter
18 - a book with a blue cover
19 - a book you were supposed to read in school. But didn't.
21 - a book with a great first line
22 - a book with pictures
23 - a book from the library
24 - a book you loved... read it again!
25 - a book that is more than 10 years old
26 - a book based on a true story

In January, I checked off #18 - a book with a blue cover by reading The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. I loved reading this book. Every month, Gretchen focused on one area of her life and tried to increase her happiness in that area. I could really relate to almost everything she did. Although she considered herself happy to begin with, she become more fulfilled during that year.

Next, I read #14 - a book set in the summer - by reading The Vacationers by Emma Straub. It's about a dysfunctional family on a vacation overseas. It was somewhat interesting, but didn't totally captivate me or anything. Easy read.

The last book for January was #21 - a book with a great first line. I read Everything I Never Told You: A Novel by Celeste Ng. WOW. I read this book really fast because it was so good!

What's the best book you've read in the last year? I need some to add to my list!

  2. What a fun task, I love to read as well and I will confess I read at work. I just finished the whole set of Hunger Games, figured what the heck I loved the movie. I constantly re-read Harry Potter books for bedtime, just enough to till I doze off. Funny no matter how many times I read those books I always find something new I didn't remember reading before. Your book list makes for a very enticing layout.

    1. Haha, Leslie! Wish I could read at work. I love the Hunger Games and Harry Potter books. I always find more details on a re-read :) And thanks for the idea about a layout - that would be neat to see at the end of the year!

  6. I'm working on reading more as well. I go through phases where I'll read every day and then not at all for a few months. I think joining an online book club has helped, in the sense that I feel a bit more of a sense of accountability. The last few books I've fully finished are Fangirl (really good), Gone Girl, and The Graveyard Book, and I'm currently in the middle of American Gods, The Golem & The Jinni, and Unbroken. There are probably about a dozen others that I've started in the past year and gotten too sidetracked to finish so I've set them aside!

    1. Good luck with the reading, Meg. My local yoga studio has a book club now too - I may join up and test it out. Thanks for all the suggestions!!

  7. Oh man, this is an awesome list, love it.

I set a goal to read 50 books this year (I was feeling perhaps a bit too ambitious?) "Me Before You" is the best one I've got in so far!

    1. I think 50 is doable - as long as you read consistently. Ive already fallen off the wagon a bit. I'm on my 4th book this year, but haven't read much this week. I'll check that book out! Thanks!
